The Initiative for Energy Justice (IEJ) is proud to announce the appointment of Kelly Sheehan as its new Co-Executive Director, effective September 6, 2024. Kelly brings twenty-five years of experience in environmental and social justice movements and will join Subin DeVar in leading IEJ’s mission to empower frontline communities and provide policymakers with policy research and frameworks to ensure a just transition to renewable energy.

Kelly Sheehan has a notable career dedicated to addressing the climate crisis and advancing policies prioritizing equity. Before joining IEJ, she founded EcoKey Partners, a consultancy providing leadership and executive capacity for environmental and social change organizations. Her extensive experience includes serving as the Senior Director of Energy Campaigns at the Sierra Club and as a grants director and policy advisor for the U.S. House of Representatives. Throughout her career, Kelly has demonstrated an exceptional ability to build partnerships, lead campaigns, and mentor the next generation of environmental leaders.

“We are elated to have Kelly join our team,” said Subin DeVar, Co-Executive Director of IEJ. “Her extensive experience and visionary leadership in the space will be invaluable as we continue to support the just transition movement and contribute to creating energy policies that benefit all communities, particularly in underserved communities. Kelly’s ability to blend strategy, policy expertise, and a deep commitment to justice makes her the perfect fit for this role.”

In her new role at IEJ, Kelly will focus on expanding the organization’s impact by influencing energy justice policy, and amplifying communities’ voices on the climate crisis’s front lines.

“I am deeply honored to join the Initiative for Energy Justice at such a crucial time,” said Kelly Sheehan. “I envision a world where accessible, affordable, renewable, and democratically managed energy is available to all communities I look forward to working alongside Subin, our partners and the incredible team at IEJ to make this vision a reality.”
